Allison noted the Games of Thrones project, though still in early development stages, took more than a year of conversation with HBO to seal the deal - a multi-year, multi-title deal, to be exact. The franchise is a "pop-culture icon" with an audience numbering millions. In the end, Telltale decided Games of Thrones fell "in the same bucket" as The Walking Dead. We look for franchises that are huge and have all those elements." "What works with the franchises we have it the characters, the story and drama and the relationships. "We want franchises that are really difficult to translate into traditional gaming, we don't want to make another Walking Dead first-person shooter," he added. "After that we ask, is there enough of an audience at the end of day that would play this thing? "We looked at things we wanted to work on and the most important things are what are we passionate about," he explained. During Telltale's "long meetings," developers would look at everything currently on the market - popular franchises and properties - and decide to pursue what most interested the staff. Initially it was Telltale that approached HBO about making a Game of Thrones game, largely due to the studio members' passion for it. We're taking their expertise and applying it to the material we bring to the table." We've talked with them about how they make their decisions and how they pace their scenes, what they do when they face a big plotline and what to keep and cut. "Playing the game should feel like watching the show and we'll be making lots of decisions the same way the showrunners do. "Creatively, we're going to defer to the show because we are using HBO's license," Allison said. However, this does not mean Telltale won't pull material from the books that didn't make an appearance on television. Martin's high-fantasy Song of Ice and Fire books and the HBO television adaptation, Game of Thrones.Īllison said Telltale's take on the series will draw from both the original books and the show, but will defer in most cases to the show in terms of representation and major elements. In addition to Tales from the Borderlands, Telltale announced a second project during the 2013 VGX awards show: an episodic game based on George R.R. Telltale feels the Borderlands' universe is a rich field of content to pluck from in terms of stories - and there absolutely will still be guns. Kevin 's dream was to find one that has great characters and passionate fans and try to do something with it."Īs for the challenges of quite literally switching gears from Borderlands to Tales from the Borderlands, from a shoot-and-loot run-and-gun action title with a breakneck pace to a more narrative- and character-driven affair, Allison said it's not a particularly difficult challenge. "When properties become a franchise, people fall in love with the characters. "Another long standing desire, especially for our founders, is to apply our concept of episodic entertainment to a giant gaming franchise," Allison said. In the end, Allison said Telltale approached Gearbox with the determination to pitch the project. There's a narrative there in Borderlands 2 but it serves a certain purpose, and we can serve a difference purpose with it for fans of the franchise." The Borderlands universe has so much story potential, all those great characters. "We could have easily left it and chalked it up to too much tequila, but we followed up when we got home," he said. We got to talking a little bit, and I don't remember when it the night it became, 'we should do this thing," but it happened over a few cocktails."Īllison said the two teams discussed their award-winning properties - Borderlands 2 and Walking Dead - for some time before the idea of a Telltale and Gearbox collaboration came up. "And Gearbox was sitting at table one and we were sitting at table two - we were there for The Walking Dead. "We were backstage at the Spike VGAs," Allison told Polygon. The upcoming Tales from the Borderlands series wouldn't have come to fruition without The Walking Dead's success and a few rounds of tequila, according to Steve Allison, senior vice president of publishing at Telltale Games. Whiplash.Įssentially, we have a few hundred pages of running, panicking, poor decision making and filler. What the mess is happening to this plot? Instead of a giant maze, we are faced with the zombie apocalypse and a desert. It was like waking up one day with no teeth in your mouth. “Anybody else wanna pee their pants and cry for mommy?” Thomas's innermost thoughts have this je ne sais quoi. The lyrical genius of Dashner brings out such heart-wrenching emotions that I often have to pause to collect myself. If someone figures it out, please tell me.ĮDIT: P.S I think I get that Frypan is a nickname now thanks. He's also about as smart as that which I don't understand since all the Gladers were suppose to be extremely smart children who where put in the maze from the last book because of their high IQs.Īpart from the few inconsistencies in this book, the one thing that never made any sense to me was that if everyone in there is suppose to be named after super smart person (like Isaac Newton, etc), then who is Frypan named after? This compared to other characters like Thomas who had about as much personality and emotion as a burnt piece of rat meat on a stick. This is mostly referring to Newt and Minho since they seemed the most real and fleshed out. I gave this book 2 stars only because James Dashner was able to create such real characters by giving them actual human qualities. Then try to tell me you didn't notice it.Īlthough this book was fast passed, a lot of it was filler and this book could really just have been shrunken into about 100 pages at the max. If this didn't annoy you at all, reread this book (NOT RECOMMENDED) and realize that this dude spent most of his life passed out. That’s especially true when it comes to the strong women who play crucial roles in the “Maze Runner” universe, from the villainous Clarkson to the virtuous Salazar to Kaya Scodelario as Thomas’ would-be love interest, whose inner conflict leaves her facing tough decisions somewhere in the middle.During this entire book, I counted how many times Thomas ended up passing out or sleeping either at the end of a chapter or paragraph and did you want to know what the finally count was?Ģ9 times this guy blacked out!! Out of 360 pages, Thomas left you with the cliff hanger of "and finally he slept" 29 times. They are overqualified for this noisy nonsense.īut they also bring an effortless multiculturalism to these movies that I’ve always appreciated, and they all get a moment to shine. They’re mostly character actors with intriguing screen presences and captivating faces: Rosa Salazar, Giancarlo Esposito, Barry Pepper, Thomas Brodie-Sangster, Ki Hong Lee, Dexter Darden and an almost unrecognizable Walton Goggins. The man at the center, O’Brien, remains hardworking and blandly handsome, but at least he’s got compelling figures surrounding him to help him sneak inside and burn it all down. (No, really, that’s what it’s called.) Simultaneously, they’re still rounding up all the remaining children and performing experiments on them to see who is immune and can provide a serum to cure this decimated world of the zombie plague. (With an acronym like that, what else could they be?)Ī team of scientists led by the coolly minimalist Ava Paige ( Patricia Clarkson) and a team of law enforcement agents led by the relentlessly evil Janson ( Aidan Gillen) maintain control of the imposing Last City. Our hero, the obligatory YA Chosen One, Thomas (Dylan O’Brien), and his crew must free their friends from the clutches of the bad guys at WCKD. Still, there’s no time to worry about that. Nowlin, he drops us right into the action-there’s no “Previously on `The Maze Runner …’”-so if you’ve forgotten this place and these characters, you may feel a little lost. Working from a script by returning writer T.S. You certainly would never want to spend any time in the Glade, or the Scorch, or any of the adjacent, post-apocalyptic hellholes, but Ball’s films make you feel as if you’ve done just that. He’s directed all three installments in the franchise-including 2014’s “ The Maze Runner” and the 2015 follow-up “The Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials”-and what separates his films from the overcrowded field of teen dystopian dramas is his visceral sense of space and energy.īall’s action sequences have a tangible, accessible quality about them, which is especially true in his doozy of an opening sequence: a 10-minute car chase/train robbery across the desert that’s got a grit, intensity and rough-hewn aesthetic reminiscent of “ Mad Max: Fury Road.” And as is the case in all the “Maze Runner” movies-especially the original-the sound design is powerful and immersive. But come on.įor a while, though, Wes Ball’s film moves really well. It takes a long time to find a death cure. First, they provided you way to set up the battle of Arnhem, and go grab some lunch without worrying that your cat was going to eat the 1st Airborne Division. When the first computer wargames started coming out, they were filling three main needs among the wargame community. The necessity or attractiveness of board game translations to the PC is well illustrated by the first such titles to crossover - wargames. That plus the added expense of starting all over again with your collection tend to make the experience less attractive to veterans of the game than it might be to newcomers. But (you just knew the "but" was coming) the facelessness of your opponents gives the game a detached feeling - which is good or bad depending on how much you want to actually interact with people. Magic The Gathering Online is a great realization of almost the entire tabletop experience and even goes as far as to smooth out a few of the inconveniences inherent in the physical card game while adding a few other new features all its own. The cards themselves are seemingly endlessly varied and this is what gives this game its collectible, quirky status. The goal is to eliminate the other player in two out of three matches and there are countless strategies you can employ, both in the construction of your deck and the way you use it in the matches. At the beginning of your turn, you draw a card, place land on the table, and use the land to cast spells and summon creatures. You and one or opponents each have a deck of cards that contains land, spells and creatures (which are just a special type of spell). Magic: The Gathering is a card-based wizard duel. But before we go any further, I should tell the two of you out there that haven't heard of the game just what it's all about. As a guy who has played the card game with embarrassing regularity, these were the two big issues in my mind when I sat down to review the PC game - can they add something to the game (or the process of playing the game at least) and can they give me anything like that same sense of enjoyment I used to get making fun of Tal's Witch Hunter deck? The answers are "yes" and "not really." Alright, so now we're getting to the real evaluation. Otherwise, what's the point? Next: Can a PC offer a comparable level of social satisfaction to a player? Usually not. I think a game has to try to take advantage of something unique in the new technology. For instance: Can a straight port be good if the original game was good? I don't think so. Even so, the issue of games that have been migrated from one setting to another or from one medium (or Entertainment Delivery System, as I call it in the book) to another raises a few important issues for reviewers. The subtitle for today's review is taken from the book that I am writing a book which no one, not even my father, is ever going to read. The rest of you are to be congratulated on your erudition, inattention or just plain bull-headedness. Boy, I bet we lost half our readers with that title alone.
